I’ve never read a manga, but I know what they look like, and Shohei Otomo’s illustrations would be compiled into a pretty kickass one–violence and crudeness guaranteed.
Just a few days ago, I made a post about the photorealistic work of Juan F. Casas: 10 ft. drawings done entirely with blue ink Bic pens. Impressed as I am by Casas’ work, I’ve learned today that the ball point pen phenomena is not exclusive to him. In fact, most of Shohei Otomo’s illustrations are done with ball point pens, but we can surely agree that “most” is not as impressive as “all” and Otomo’s illustrations are definitely not 10 ft. tall or photorealistic–but they’re good. Extremely good.
Otomo’s graphic work exudes painstaking attention to detail. It’s bawdy, bold and the blending of modern images with traditional Japanese representations is refreshingly entertaining.
A lot of my favourite images were pornographic enough for me to think twice about posting them here (and that’s hardly a concern for me), so if you’re interested in seeing more I urge you to visit Shohei Otomo’s online portfolio.
